In many investigations it is helpful to set up a facility in the community in which the crime occurred in order to help the police to co-ordinate the investigation with help from the community. From here, police can question witnesses, receive phone calls and take the statements of those who may wish to express some key information. In the United Kingdom, this process is usually lead by a specialist team known as the Major Incident Team(MIT). An incident room is usually at its most helpful when someone is missing, and time is a crucial factor, however it can be useful in all cases involving a community, and witnesses are needed.
The OJ Simpson Case
When concerning the OJ Simpson case, there should have been an incident room set up in the community in order to draw out witnesses of the crime, however one was not set up by the investigators as they did not believe one to be needed, as they focused their investigation on OJ Simpson very quickly, and believed they did not need any more witnesses. An incident room could have potentially been very important to the case, as there were numerous witnesses who claimed to have seen OJ in the area before the murder, described as driving erratically- however of the few witnesses who did come forward, many could not be used as they told their story to the press, therefore causing them to have a biased opinion, as they were getting paid for their statement by tabloids.
Had there been an incident room, many more witnesses could have potentially come forward to give information about the case, potentially leading to OJ Simpson being found guilty.
